Sony Sets November Launch Date for Inexpensive Stereo-3D PlayStation Display

From X-bit Labs: Sony Computer Entertainment America said on Wednesday that its inexpensive stereoscopic 3D PlayStation 3D Display will become widely available in the U.S. starting from November 13, 2011. The product will enable gamers who do not want to acquire expensive stereo-3D (S3D) high-def TV-sets to immerse into S3D-supporting video games.

The Sony PlayStation 3D display will have $499.99 recommended price and will include a pair of 3D glasses that will cost $69.99 when sold separately in the U.S.. The solution - which SCE positions strictly for gamers and those who just want to try S3D technology - has a number of advantages over competing products, but it is definitely not something remarkable when it comes to price. For example, Nvidia Corp. sells an S3D Nvidia 3D Vision bundle with Acer HN274H LCD display (1080p, TN panel technology, etc.) for $588.

"The 3D Display was made to play 3D games right out of the box. For the MSRP of $499.99, you get the 3D Display, one pair of 3D Glasses, MotorStorm Apocalypse Blu-ray game, and an HDMI cable. All you need to do is hook up your PS3 system and you’re ready to go," a statement by Sony reads.

The PlayStation 3D Display (CECH-ZED1) features a 24" 1920x1080 (1080p) LCD display based on VA panel technology that adopts quad-speed frame sequential display technology that is able to minimize crosstalk distortion. The 3D Display supports several 3D formats, including “frame packing,” “top and bottom” and “side by side,” which will offer users various options for using 3D. The display features high contrast (5000:1), wide viewing angle (176°) high response time (4ms GTG average). The display also sports stereo 2 channel with subwoofer speakers.
