From PC Mag: Microsoft’s AI tools have so far been mostly powered by large language models from other companies, such as its partnership with OpenAI. After launching previews of two of its own AI models in August, the brand has told employees it wants to increase its computing power for future expansions.

During an all-employee meeting on Sept. 11, a Microsoft executive explained how it plans to make “significant investments” in physical infrastructure for the expansion.

According to a leaked transcript, seen by Business Insider, Microsoft AI CEO, Mustafa Suleyman, told employees, "It's critical that a company of our size, with the diversity of businesses that we have, that we are, you know, able to be self-sufficient in AI, if we choose to.”

His comments refer to Microsoft expanding its own AI chip cluster to help it increase power to quickly build its own models. The meeting saw Suleyman cite how the previously released preview models were trained on what he called a “tiny cluster” of GPUs.
