From PC Mag: Tesla on Thursday announced it is adding Cybercabs to its robotaxi fleet in Austin, Texas.
First teased back in 2024, Tesla’s Cybercab is a fully autonomous electric vehicle that requires no driver intervention. In the absence of a steering wheel and pedals, the AV uses “camera vision and sensors to intelligently and safely navigate city streets, highways, complicated intersections, and parking lots,” Tesla says on a support page.
It appears select customers in Austin can now choose between a Cybercab and Model Y when booking a ride via the Robotaxi app. Availability, however, may be limited as only 45 of Tesla’s 314 robotaxis operational in Texas are Cybercabs, The New York Times reports.
Tesla says Cybercabs can be used for errands, commutes, and other purposes. Once the car arrives, its butterfly doors will automatically open as you approach it. You’ll also find options to enter the car, start a ride, or open its trunk, spacious enough for luggage, wheelchairs, golf clubs, and scooters, on the Robotaxi mobile app.
