From PC Mag: Apple’s first-ever touch-screen MacBook Pros are here, with tandem OLED displays and a thinner and lighter laptop design. But brace for high pricing.
The MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display promises exceptional visuals and color contrasts. Tandem OLED, which stacks two light-emitting layers in the screen, has been gaining steam for its top-tier visuals, and now Apple is ready to adopt it.
“PROLED XDR is the world’s best laptop display,” says Apple’s hardware chief Johny Srouji. “It pairs state-of-the-art tandem OLED technology with advanced algorithms in our display engine to deliver the kind of visual fidelity pros have been dreaming of.”
The touch screen gives MacBook Pro owners a way to interact with 3D models and apps with their fingers, rather than a mouse and keyboard, Apple says. Users will be able to swipe, pinch, and double-tap to interact with apps, web pages, and other content. Touch functionality is designed to be fast and low-latency, thanks to the touch sensor built directly into the display.
As expected, the new MacBooks are pricey. The 14-inch version starts at $2,899, while the 16-inch costs $3,399; both have at least 24GB of unified memory and 1TB of storage.
The base model features an M5 Pro chip, which the company debuted in March as part of an earlier refresh of the Pro line. Upgrading to an M5 Max tips the price to $4,499 and up. Both chips feature an 18-core CPU architecture, including six “supercores,” and should outperform the newer 2-nanometer M6 chip, which has only a 12-core CPU architecture.
