From ExtremeTech: Apple is exploring the possibility of using AI from Anthropic instead of OpenAI (which they currently use) for the future of Siri. Apple has had conversations with both companies about adding their LLMs to Siri. The company has asked these firms to train versions of their models that could be tested on Apple's cloud infrastructure. This comes after Apple's rumored interest in buying Perplexity.
Apple's exploration of third-party models is still in the early stages. Amazon-backed Anthropic declined to comment, while Apple and OpenAI did not respond to Reuters' requests, as reported by CNBC. Apple previously announced that AI improvements to Siri would be delayed until 2026, which were earlier delayed to 2025.
At this time, when every major brand, especially Apple's direct rivals, Samsung, Google, and Microsoft, are talking about nothing but AI, Apple concentrated more on other things rather than AI at WWDC.
Apple software chief Craig Federighi announced that the company will allow third-party developers to use its core AI model. This will help them create apps that focus on privacy. Apple will also provide code completion options from both its own tools and OpenAI's in its main developer software.
