Apple Begins App Store Age Verification in Texas

From PC World: To ensure compliance with a new Texas law, Apple is introducing mandatory age verification for new Apple Accounts in the state starting today, June 4.

Under SB 2420, users in Texas must verify that they are 18 or older when creating a new Apple Account. Younger users will need to join a Family Sharing group and require parent or guardian consent for app downloads, in-app purchases, and other significant changes to app settings.

Developers will be responsible for ensuring age-appropriate experiences within an app, and they must use Apple’s Declared Age Range API to determine the user’s age category. Parents or guardians may revoke consent granted to an app at any time, and the App Store will notify developers of the revocation via a server notification.

Apple has long opposed age-verification laws, citing privacy violations. Two months before SB 2420 was initially scheduled to take effect on Jan. 1, 2026, Apple said it “remains concerned about the potential implications” of similar laws. “Specifically, we worry they could undermine the privacy of all users by requiring the collection of sensitive personal information just to download an app – even those that simply provide weather forecasts or sports scores.”
