From PC Mag: It has taken vastly longer than a fortnight for the lawsuit brought by Fortnite’s developer to compel some changes to Google’s Play Store, but that time has finally come.
On Wednesday, Google documented a series of reductions in the fees it charges developers for transactions in its Android app store, including an option for them to cut their costs further by bringing their own payment option.
A post on the Android Developers blog leads with Google separating its revenue-share “service fee” on app transactions from the billing fee it will levy when it processes customer payments.
Where Google now charges 15% of a developer’s first $1 million in app transactions, it will lower that share to 10% on new app installs starting June 30 in the US, the European Economic Area (meaning the EU plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway), and the UK. A new 5% billing fee would bring Google’s take back to 15%, but developers can now invite users to click through to their own sites for an in-app purchase.
