Nvidia Develops Location Tech for Blackwell Chips

From ExtremeTech: Although the Trump administration plans to allow Nvidia to sell its powerful H200 AI GPUs to China, chip smuggling remains a major problem. And as it turns out, Nvidia has been working on a technology that could help combat that problem. Reuters, which broke the story, notes that the tech would allow a customer to see which country the chip is in, making it harder for companies to operate banned chips undetected.

The anti-smuggling tech involves software that makes use of Nvidia servers to monitor chip locations. It's part of a package that is designed to help customers monitor the health of their chip inventories. Data centers employ massive quantities of GPUs and use software to monitor the performance and health of their chip "fleets."

Nvidia hasn't yet released the tracking capability. When it does, Blackwell chips will be the first to make use of the new tech, according to Reuters. Nvidia hasn't indicated whether it will make location tech available for older chips, although it's reportedly considering doing so.
