From PC Mag: Want to know how tech giants will control your digital future? Look at how they hamstring your devices now. Apple's iOS 27 is already laying the groundwork for paywalling your iPhone. Now, iPadOS 27 exposes a cynical new strategy of software-enforced obsolescence: restricting Apple's advanced, local Siri AI to devices with premium memory tiers.
On paper, this sounds like a reasonable concession given the heavy computational requirements of modern AI models. But in practice, it introduces an unprecedented bottleneck within the iPad lineup, even at the highest "Pro" tier. By designing an ecosystem where software longevity is tethered strictly to memory, Apple is altering the unwritten contract of consumer technology and accelerating the obsolescence cycle for high-end devices that are barely two years old.
This signals a worrying shift in the industry, where hardware is no longer aging out naturally. Now, it's being outpaced by software design well before it's ready.
To understand how jarring the shift is, look at Apple's strict hardware memory tiering. When the M4 iPad Pro launched in 2024, Apple tied its internal specifications to price and storage. The standard 256GB and 512GB models were equipped with 8GB of RAM, while the premium 1TB and 2TB models were equipped with 16GB of RAM. At the time, 8GB felt like plenty for a tablet. It matched the RAM of the new MacBooks that launched earlier that same year.
