From PC Mag: We've been awaiting a swell of PCI Express (PCIe) 5.0 SSDs to come ashore for some months now. First, we were waiting for the platform support to solidify, under both AMD and Intel; one without the other would likely thwart many PCIe 5.0 drives from appearing too soon. At the start of 2023, with 13th Gen Core (Intel) and Ryzen 7000 (AMD) now cemented as the desktop CPU platforms of choice, both of the major PC platforms have a critical mass of boards at their backs, supporting their latest CPUs, that will bring along PCIe 5.0 buses and M.2 slots for the ride.
We're just waiting for the SSD makers to get in the vehicle. At CES 2023, we saw the first signs they were finding their keys and putting on their coats.
Given the platform readiness, a world stage like CES might have seemed a ripe opportunity for such a mass rollout of PCIe 5.0 SSDs. But all indications are that it’s still slightly early days for this class of presumptively super-speedy drives. We saw four different early-model PCI Express SSDs--from MSI (two of them), Gigabyte/Aorus, and XPG/ADATA--but only one of them was exhibited actually running a test showing real numbers.
