From PC Mag: Walmart is finally adding support for tap-to-pay, meaning Apple Pay and Google Pay users will soon be able to make transactions by simply tapping their phones at checkout.
Tap-to-pay support will arrive at select Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations on Aug. 24. The support will be extended to all US stores by the end of this year and to all fuel stations by the end of 2027, the company said in a press release.
The move marks the end of a long standoff between Walmart and third-party mobile payment apps. While most retailers embraced Apple Pay and Google Pay, Walmart, for a considerable time, sought to compete with them by using Walmart Pay. The retail giant also briefly backed a rival QR code-based service named CurrenctC but later withdrew support due to low adoption.
Walmart Pay will continue to coexist as a payment option alongside cash, credit cards, and now Android and iOS payment tools. “We want customers and members to have choice in how they pay, so they can check out in the way that works best for them,” the company said.
Google has welcomed the move. A blog post encouraged customers to start using Google Pay at Walmart. You just need to add your preferred card to the service beforehand and then unlock your phone and hold it near a card reader at the checkout counter to complete the transaction. You can find more details about setting up the payment method on a support page.
